BST wants every student to succeed. Our admissions decisions support a positive learning community where students can thrive, build strong friendships and prepare for their future pathways. The principles below apply to new admissions, re-enrolment and short-term enrolment.
Admissions decisions are made by the school’s Senior Leadership Team.
Admission is subject to an appropriate place being available for the student.
Each application is considered individually, taking account of academic readiness, proficiency in English, attendance, behaviour, previous school records and whether BST can support the student appropriately.
When a student applies to join BST, the family must provide complete and accurate information about the student’s education, attendance, behaviour, health and support needs, together with any relevant assessments, reports or support plans.
Before admission is confirmed, BST will also request information from the student’s current or previous school.
If important information is missing, inaccurate or disclosed later, the school may review its admissions decision or the student’s continued enrolment.
Children may join Early Years from 18 months old.
Prior knowledge of English is not required for students applying below Year 4 of study (approximately 8 years old). Students applying for Year 4 or above normally complete an English-language assessment and a cognitive abilities assessment. The Senior Leadership Team may waive one or both assessments when sufficiently detailed and strong previous school records are available.
BST determines the appropriate year-group placement after considering the student’s age, previous education, school records, assessment results, and educational pathway.
Students who need additional English-language support are considered individually. BST will assess whether the student can access the curriculum with the support available. When additional paid language support is recommended, the support required and any associated costs will be explained and agreed with the family in advance.
Where the school cannot provide an appropriate level of support, it may decline the application.
BST welcomes applications from students with special educational needs and disabilities. We are a mainstream school, not a specialist SEND setting. For each student, we consider whether we have the staff, facilities and specialist resources needed to provide a suitable education and appropriate support.
When a student may need provision beyond the school’s standard resources, such as a dedicated Learning Support Assistant, the required support and any associated costs will be discussed with the family as per our ND/SEND policy.
BST may have to decline an application where it cannot provide a safe, suitable education or the support the student requires.
Applications involving significant or complex medical needs are considered individually. Families must provide relevant medical information and care plans so that BST can decide whether it can support the student safely and appropriately. The school will consult the family and relevant professionals before reaching a decision.
BST students normally take three or four A-Level exams. Admission to particular A-Level subjects may depend on previous achievement in the relevant prerequisite subjects.
We normally expect at least grade B in the relevant IGCSE subjects, or comparable results from another education system.
The relevant subject specialist and the Senior Leadership Team make the decision.
Exceptions may be considered where other evidence, including academic performance, attendance, commitment and work ethic, indicates that the student is likely to succeed.
Exceptions may also be considered where personal circumstances affected the student’s ability to complete an examination or perform well in it.
Current students receive priority when places are allocated for the following school year. Children with siblings already attending BST also receive priority for admission, within the limits of available places.
For current students, school fees and other financial obligations must be up to date before re-enrolment can be confirmed. BST also considers the student’s attendance, behaviour, engagement and educational needs, together with the school’s ability to continue providing appropriate support.
Re-enrolment also requires students and parents to comply with the school’s policies and applicable codes of conduct.
Short-term enrolment is offered for a minimum of one school term (approximately three months). Decisions are made by the Senior Leadership Team and take into account availability, the student’s needs and whether a short-term placement would be appropriate. Decisions also take into account the other admissions requirements, including academic readiness, proficiency in English, attendance, behaviour, previous school records and whether BST can support the student appropriately.
Families must pay the required fees in advance, and the student must wear the school uniform.
Once BST has offered a place, the parent or guardian must promptly complete the required acceptance steps and payments. The place is secured only after these steps have been completed.
Our fees and payment details are listed on our School Fees page.
Before or shortly after the student starts, the family must provide accurate contact details, including emails, telephone numbers, and street address. If this information changes later on, the family must promptly give the school the updated information.
BST does not discriminate on any ground protected by law. Decisions involving disability, health, language or additional educational needs are made individually, taking account of reasonable adjustments and the support available.
